Week 21 Recap & Suggested Assignments

~~GRAMMAR~~
We learned a new structure today!  YIPEE!!  And what about those infinitives?  Don't you just love to learn new info???  Also, nice job on "Name That Conjunction".  Committing those mastery charts to memory will really pay off!

Structure: Compound-Complex   Purpose: ALL  Pattern: S-Vi & S-Vt-DO

We've looked at Compound sentences and Complex sentences, but what makes a sentence Compound-Complex??  Just combine the two structures & you've got it - that is to say a Compound-Complex sentences requires two independent clauses (compound) & a dependent clause (complex).

S         SP    Vi       Vi   C    SP    Vi
Mrs. C., who bakes, eats and she   tutors.

S        SP    Vt      DO        Vt          DO     C   SP     Vt       A    DO
Mrs. C,. who bakes sweets, devours cookies and she instructs the class.

FABULOUS JOB ON THE SENTENCES TODAY!!!

POS: Conjunctions

Remember - There are 3 main types of conjunctions:
Coordinating: (most common) connects grammatically equal words - Think FANBOYS -For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So
Correlative: always come in pairs - either/or; neither/nor; both/and; whether/or; not only/but also; not/but
Subordinating: unite an independent clause with a dependent clause - usually begins adverbial clauses - www. asia .because; see mastery chart for complete list

~~Writing~~
1. No new vocab - Review  We'll play a vocab game Tuesday so be ready!

We learned about some different structures for contrast papers.  Remember to check with your parent on how your paper will be structured.  Older students (especially those going off to challenge next year) should be working on the advanced structure we discussed in class (2 separate paragraphs w/ an intro statement & conclusion statement; 1 paragraph to for similarities & 1 for difference or you could take 2 main differences and write 1 paragraph for each difference.  Here is a good website for sample contrast papers http://www.roanestate.edu/owl/Com_Con.html).  Younger students can just do 1 paragraph per outline on p 134.

WEDNESDAY
Finish any outlining & draft paragraph(s).  Be sure to include examples (remember those should come from Greek Myths like Pandora's Box and from the Bible) of each characteristic as we discussed in class.

THURSDAY
GET OUT YOUR SRN!!!  Begin to revise & edit.  Make sure you have a clear topic (or intro) statement that will tell the reader what the paragraph is about.  (see notes from class)  Look over your clincher statement and make sure it reflects the topic sentence (using different words - YES GET OUT THAT THESAURUS!)  Then highlight those verbs.

FRIDAY
AGAIN - GET OUT THAT SRN!  Replace lame verbs & to be verbs with good action verbs.  Add QUALITY (not quantity) adjectives.  Read your paper to a family member for feedback.

MONDAY
Make any final revisions.  Be sure you have examples, that your topic sentence is supported by the rest of the paragraph.

Bring your final papers into class on Tuesday!!! :)
