Week 5 Recap & Suggested Assignments

Greetings, gregarious grammarians!

You are almost half way into the semester already! Aren't you excited??  Your are well on your way.

IN REVIEW:
~~GRAMMAR~~

POSE - Well today we took 3 simple s-vi sentences and did a modified quid et quo on the nouns/pronouns & verbs-all those lovely parts of speech we've learned to far.  You all did so well!! That is the most advanced task - be proud of yourselves and keep practicing and keep studying those mastery charts!!

We played a football grammar game to review sentence purposes.  Did you know that you completed task 5 - rewriting by purpose??? That's another advanced skill!!!!

Our sentence this week is: Simple, Interrogative, S-Vi
EEL Model Sentence:  Did Jesus weep?  or Who wept?

To form a question we started with a declarative sentence: Mrs. C. loves.

1.Replace subject with an interrogative pronoun:  Who loves?
                                     OR
2.Begin with a helping verb:  Did Mrs. C love?
(or replace DID with another helping verb such as WILL - you can also try other helping verbs such as HAS, but note that the verb would have to change tense (be conjugated) in order to accurately construct a "verb phrase" that represents that tense  i.e. Has Mrs. C. loved?)
                                     OR
3.Raise your voice (called inflection) as you repeat the declarative form: Mrs. C. loves?

We took a look at how to diagram an interrogative sentence. ***REMEMBER, IT'S EASIER TO IDENTIFY THE SUBJECT & VERB - ESPECIALLY SENTENCES WITH A HELPING VERB - IF YOU CHANGE THE INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE TO A DECLARATIVE.  For example:  Did Mrs. C love?  Change to Mrs. C did love.

Look for interrogative sentences this week. Besides the fact that it has a question mark, challenge yourself to decipher just what makes it interrogative.

Inflected voice? I had a nightmare?
Interrogative pronoun? Who had a nightmare?
Helping verb? Did I have a nightmare?

~~WRITING~~
Today we looked at everyone's paper and gave suggestions on how to eliminate those pesty "to be" verbs and replace them with meaningful strong verbs.

Look at your draft and just as we did in class, look to combine sentences & add those beautiful sentence openers.  Remember 5 sense words and those sensational stylistic techniques (USE YOUR SRN!!)

FRIDAY
Type up your final.  Read it to a family member for feedback.  Bring in your final paper to class.

Parent Corner:
Just another reminder that for newer/younger students PLEASE scale accordingly.  On the Mastery Chart challenge - if you're working on 1 chart - just have them verbally tell you the parts you would like them to have memorized. (i.e.. sentence patterns, purposes & 5 parts of sentence)  For the more experienced student - go for the gusto!
