Week 3 Recap & Suggested Assignments

Hello my excellent Essentials Students & Domestic Goddesses (that's you moms)!  Is your cranium still swimming?  If so, don't be alarmed!  It's still adjusting to all the knowledge you're downloading! :)


This week our POS (part of speech) emphasis was on nouns & pronouns.  Our sentence focus was on a simple, declarative and/or exclamatory, S-Vi sentence.


In Review:

~~GRAMMAR~~


Nouns - names a person, place thing or idea


Types of Nouns:
-proper (specific person, place or thing - gets a CAPITAL letter - i.e. Mrs. C)
                                                         OR
-common (non-specific person, place or thing - i.e. teacher)
-concrete (if you can touch it, experience it or it has physical substance, it's concrete - i.e. tree, movie, universe)
                                                         OR
-abstract (concepts & ideas - i.e. dreams, freedom, love)
-collective (represent group of things - i.e. herd, club, team)
-simple or compound (i.e. book bag or bookbag)


Nouns can be singular or plural (most plural nouns usually end in "s" - but watch out for those exceptions like men, women & children)


Nouns are male, female or neuter (say what??  Yes, most nouns are neuter; ships, planes & trains are considered female; people are male or female & animals could be male, female or neuter)


Noun Cases:
-nominative (when a noun is used as a subject or predicate noun)
-objective (when a noun is used as a direct object, indirect object, object of preposition or object complement noun)
-possessive (when a noun is used as a possessive noun adjective)


**Nouns may be also used as appositives and nouns of direct address (My sister, Joy, loves to swim.  Mrs. Sargent, will you tutor my class this week?)


Pronouns - a word that takes the place of a noun
Unlike nouns, pronouns change when used in different ways, depending on their use.  They can be used as the subject, an object or modifier).


Types of Pronouns:
-personal (refers to a person - i.e. I, me, he, she, it, they, you)
-reflexive (compound personal pronouns - i.e. myself, yourself)
-possessive (show ownership i.e. my, his, your, whose, theirs, ours)
-relative (used to introduce adjectival subordinate clauses - i.e. who, whom, whose, which, that)
-interrogative (used in questions - i.e. what - may also be relative pronouns)
-demonstrative (refer to distance from or nearness to the speaker & point out people or objects - i.e. this these, that, those)
-indefinite (don't refer to any particular or "definite" person or thing - i.e. any number, some, many, anything, both, all, everyone)

**This week starts our "tasks" (p 67 - getting Dialectic @ Home Work) - work through sample sentences - 1st 3 are 'basic" & 4-5 are advanced.  (My suggestion for newer/younger students is to start with basic sentences and move up when ready; advanced - 2nd & 3rd year - work through 1 basic, do both advanced & have student try to come up with their own to work through)

CHALLENGE: Using this week's sentence pattern & purpose (simple, S-vi, Declarative & Exclamatory) create 4 sentences - (2 using pronouns) & using your mastery charts/trivium tables - list all the information you can about the nouns & pronouns in your sentences (i.e. nouns=common/proper; concrete/abstract etc.) - MOMS - YOU SET THE GOAL AS TO HOW MUCH YOU WANT THEM TO LIST (remember you'll keep track of challenges & points earned)  ***5 POINTS****


~~WRITING~~
1. Cut out & learn Vocab from lesson 3


WEDNESDAY:
  • Finish KWO p 22
  • Working through your KWO, reconstruct a DRAFT of your paragraph
THURSDAY:
  • You're an artist Painting With Your Words, so fill your cranium with as many mental images as you can. Jot down what comes to mind when you browse those pictures, because they will be a jumping-off place as you decide on rich, descriptive vocabulary.  Remember those sentence openers & 5 sense adjectives we discussed in class! Highlight all your verbs in 1 color and nouns/pronouns in another. (Read p31 for ideas on words that appeal to the senses)
  • Armed with knowledge and visuals, begin to add those quality adjectives, strong ACTION verbs, ly words, alliteration & sentence openers.  For those students who are familiar with other stylistic techniques - add those in!  Don't forget about vocab too!!
FRIDAY

  • Type your final paper & bring it in to class on Tuesday
